The things I never knew about llamas…

…but thank goodness, Kameron Hurley is here to fill me in in this interesting article about the importance of writing misogyny out of our narratives and not just relying on thoughtless tropes.

International short story competition

I love the idea of this competition. The execution’s sometimes a bit sketchy though, and the English translations are hard to understand. However, it’s free and it’s fun and the idea of creating this international community of words is worth supporting. So, the competition is a hundred word story, and this year’s theme appears to be ‘Mandela: Words and Concord’, although I suspect they mean Words and Unity or Harmony, at a guess. Concord seems odd and I don’t speak Spanish! Anyone? 🙂

A field trip

Yesterday morning the story cafe relocated to the coffee shop at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery.  We had a lovely time!  It was great to find inspiration amongst the artworks and artefacts, and to gather round the table to talk about the ideas that had been generated, and how we might develop them. A knitted child’s sock from ancient Egypt, an old wooden chest and a painting of a woman with violently smeared lipstick were among the things that caught our attention. Take a look at the  V & A  website for a wealth of great ideas for developing poems and stories from art.
